Cottondale exists because things cross there. The east–west rail line built across the Panhandle in the 1880s met the north–south line running from Dothan down to Panama City, and the town grew up around the junction. Today the same logic holds with pavement: US-90, US-231, and an I-10 interchange all meet at Cottondale.

Pine plantation dominates much of the surrounding ground — timber tracts here changed hands steadily after Hurricane Michael's 2018 timber losses, so ask about replanting history on any wooded parcel.
